If you haven’t been to the HITS (Horses In The Sun) Ocala farm you have 4 more weeks to attend. Hunters and Jumpers of all ages with classes including schooling/training and of course, a vendor area to shop for high-quality merchandise from tack to saddles to shirts and accessories. Each Sunday culminates the week with the Ocala Masters Grand Prix. Prize money galore with the Great American $1 Million Dollar Grand Prix on the final weekend March 22, 2020.
This year’s Week V Grand Prix had a $200,000 purse sponsored by Ocala Electric Utility, triple last year’s Week V of just $50,000 according to HITS Founder and CEO Tom Struzzieri who started this operation 37 years ago. HITS owns and operates 3 venues, Ocala, Florida, Saugerties, New York, and Chicago, Illinois. Ocala is the ‘favorite’ “the horses love it here” says Tom.
The height of the jump for the Sunday Grand Prix is 1.4 Meters or 4.59 Feet with single vertical jumps, combinations, oxer’s (two jumps with rails at parallel height), a square (two jumps where distance between jumps equals the height of the rails), and the ascending (the front rail is lower than the back rail).
This is a family-friendly event, bring your 4-wheeler, ATV/UTV or golf cart. Load it up with chairs, (bleachers surround the stadium), coolers, food, and be ready to enjoy the grounds and then settle down to watch the week/day ending Grand Prix. Pets are allowed. There is a food court with Mexican Food, Vegetarian Selections, Coffee, Beer and Wine, and snacks.
If you do not have one of the above-mentioned vehicles, you can rent a golf cart on site. It’s a vast area, like walking one of the Orlando parks! Carts rent for $85/day with a minimum of 3/day rental.
The farm is made up of 450 acres, including 27 permanent barns, 540 permanent stalls, and many turn-out options. The ‘stadium’ was built in 2013 and houses the main events.
HITS Post Time Farm is located at 13710 Old Blitchton Rd Williston, Florida just off US HWY 27 west of Interstate 75.
